Liam Sloan has joined Bolton College as its new Principal and Chief Executive Officer. He began his role last week, marking the start of a new chapter for the College.
Returning to the UK after nine years working in Australia and New Zealand, Liam brings fresh perspectives and extensive international experience to the role.
With over 25 years of experience in education, Liam’s career began as a Business Lecturer at Doncaster College & University Centre. Since then, he has held senior leadership roles across the UK and internationally, including his most recent position as Provost at Federation University Australia and Chief Executive of Federation TAFE.
Originally from Dumfries, Scotland, Liam has made it clear that students will be at the heart of every decision he makes. Alongside this student-centred approach, he is committed to ensuring the College remains strong, sustainable and prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
Engaging with learners and championing their ambitions is central to Liam’s vision. He aims to develop a strategic roadmap that supports the College’s growth, resilience, and adaptability in an evolving educational landscape.
During his first week, Liam hosted staff forums to explore the College’s strengths and priorities. He emphasised the importance of collaboration, creating a supportive environment, and building on the College’s role as a cornerstone of the Bolton community.
Liam said: “I am honoured to lead Bolton College, an institution with a 200-year history that has long been central to the life and identity of Bolton. The College embodies the town’s proud heritage and vibrant community.
“From my very first day, it was clear that the voices and ambitions of our students must guide the progress of Bolton College.
“I am committed to ensuring that every learner has access to high-quality education and meaningful opportunities to achieve their goals and make a lasting impact on their lives and communities.
“While further education faces challenges such as funding constraints, rising costs, and the need to adapt to technological advancements, I believe these pressures also present opportunities for innovation and growth.
“Together, we will build a future that reflects our learners’ ambitions, strengthens the College, and upholds our commitment to excellence.”
Doctor Andrew Roberts, Chair of Governors at Bolton College, said: “After a rigorous recruitment process and relocation back to the UK we are delighted to welcome Liam to Bolton College as our new Principal and CEO.
“The board are fully behind his vision for the College, and we are particularly delighted with his commitment to quality improvement whilst continuing to ensure that our students remain at the centre of all do.
“During his first week he has met with many of our hardworking staff, sharing his plans and priorities. We wish him every success in his new role both at the College and within the wider University of Bolton Group.”
Looking ahead, Liam is focused on enhancing teaching and learning, addressing staff priorities, and ensuring the College thrives in a challenging environment. By developing a robust five-year strategy, he aims to balance financial pressures with a commitment to delivering outstanding education and driving continuous improvement in every area.
