Two Years In — and More Important Than Ever
The Greater Manchester Maths Ambassador Exchange has been running for two years, quietly building a community of people who care about maths, confidence and inclusion across the post-16 education sector.
During that time, one thing has become increasingly clear:
maths is not just a curriculum issue, it’s a culture, inclusion and leadership issue.
With Ofsted placing stronger emphasis on:
- how well learners’ needs are supported,
- whether staff have the skills and confidence to adapt practice,
- and how inclusion is enacted across organisations,
there has never been a better moment to widen the conversation and invite more people into it.
What Is the Maths Ambassador Exchange?
The Exchange is a supportive, practical community for anyone who:
- values the importance of maths,
- wants to make a difference for learners,
- and believes confidence matters as much as content.
Members don’t need to teach maths or deliver Functional Skills.
They do need to care about how maths shows up in:
- learner confidence,
- progression and employability,
- curriculum access,
- and everyday decision-making.
In short, if maths affects your learners or colleagues the Exchange is for you.
Why Are We Growing the Exchange Now?
As maths becomes more firmly embedded within inclusion and leadership conversations, it’s vital that responsibility doesn’t sit with a small group of specialists.
The Maths Ambassador Exchange supports providers to:
- move away from maths being siloed or avoided,
- build shared understanding and confidence across roles,
- and develop a positive organisational culture where maths supports, rather than blocks, learner success.
This is about collective capability, not individual expertise.
What Are the Benefits of Joining?
Members of the Exchange benefit from:
- A monthly newsletter
sharing insights, ideas, examples and signposting to useful resources. - An online toolkit
with practical materials that can be used, adapted and shared within organisations. - A LinkedIn members group
offering informal peer connection, discussion and idea-sharing between meetings. - Quarterly face-to-face meetings
held on Friday mornings, with lunch and refreshments provided, creating space for meaningful conversation, reflection and networking.
Just as importantly, members benefit from being part of a supportive, positive community that focuses on what can be done, rather than what feels difficult or daunting.
Joining as a Team — Leadership, Inclusion and Collective Capability
One of the key strengths of the Maths Ambassador Exchange is that there’s no limit on how many people can join from the same organisation.
From a leadership and inspection perspective, this matters.
Under the current Ofsted framework, providers are expected to demonstrate that:
- staff across roles understand learners’ needs,
- educators and support staff have the skills and confidence to respond effectively,
- and inclusion is embedded consistently rather than relying on individual expertise.
When multiple colleagues engage in the Maths Ambassador Exchange; across leadership, teaching, learner support, quality and curriculum, organisations are better placed to evidence:
- shared understanding and consistent language around maths,
- confident, inclusive practice in everyday learning and support,
- and leadership oversight of staff capability and development.
This is not about creating a single maths “champion”.
It is about building collective capability, a workforce that is confident, aligned and equipped to ensure maths supports learner progress rather than becoming a barrier.
What’s the Commitment?
The commitment is intentionally light, but meaningful.
We simply ask that members:
- are positive about maths (even if they don’t feel confident in it),
- want to make a difference for learners and colleagues,
- and take an active part in the Exchange, whether that’s attending meetings, engaging with resources, sharing ideas, or contributing to discussion.
There’s no expectation to have all the answers.
Just a willingness to learn, share and support others.
Why Join the Maths Ambassador Exchange?
One of the strengths of the Maths Ambassador Exchange is that there’s no limit on how many people can join from the same organisation.
In fact, we actively encourage it.
When multiple colleagues take part; across leadership, teaching, learner support, quality and curriculum, organisations benefit from:
- shared understanding and language around maths,
- greater confidence and consistency in learner support,
- and a more embedded, inclusive maths culture.
This isn’t about creating a single “expert” it’s about building collective capability.
A Merry Band with a Serious Purpose
The Maths Ambassador Exchange isn’t about compliance or perfection.
It’s about people working together to build confidence, inclusion and impact.
If maths still feels like a barrier in your organisation, joining the Exchange could be the most positive step you take this year – find out more at our information webinar on the 28th January:
