Following the lockdown of businesses across the UK as a response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the public transport industry were hit particularly hard. The bus and coach industry had to reduce their service offer drastically to reflect the lack of demand for public transport. This led to vehicle fleets parked up and staff placed on the governments Job Retention Scheme (Furlough) and a huge reduction in income.
Total People deliver Apprenticeships to a national provider of public transport where we train 100+ Apprentices. The employer wanted their Apprentices to continue to receive good quality training despite the difficulties within their business. They had specific outcomes they expected to be included within the training such as, Welfare support, Health & Safety training around both their industry and including COVID-19 awareness and IAG to support Apprentice retention.
The Automotive staff at Total People who are working from home due to all of our centres having to close, responded to their request and designed a remote training package to a specific brief from the employer and initially delivered this training to Furloughed Apprentices. This was followed by delivery to “in work” Apprentices after the impact was so positive in the initial training sessions.
The delivery is hosted on a webinar based platform with presentations, activities, visual learning and appropriate assessment methods suited to this type of training. The take up of the training is very impressive; excellent attendance, good levels of progression maintained and learner interaction is very high.
As we have continued to deliver this training, the employer have been able to bring all of their Apprentices from Furlough and back into the workplace. The training has allowed the Apprentices to maintain technical knowledge and H&S awareness to support their transition back to work comfortably. The training is still being delivered to Apprentices to this day and will continue for the near future.
